"The proposed County . . . would not be economically viable at current levels of service. Without an increase in taxes, significant reductions in current service deliveries would be necessary . . . "
Mission County Formation Commission - appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger

Top Ten Reasons to Vote NO on "H":

  1. State law requires that the new Mission (northern) County balance its projected budget shortfall of $30 million per year by increasing taxes or eliminating services.

  2. This amount doesn't include significant start up costs for purchasing computers, buildings, equipment, etc. or funds for a new jail.

  3. Mission County would need to slash key services such as public health, safety, road maintenance, and parks.

  4. Duplicate offices, employees and officials will be necessary, increasing government costs for decreased services.

  5. The poor financial status of the new county will increase the cost of county borrowing and could decrease property values;

  6. Meeting new costs will likely require conversion of farm lands to commercial and residential use;

  7. New development will cause more traffic, and air, beach and ocean pollution.

  8. Thousands of contracts with workers, government agencies and corporation will have to be renegotiated;

  9. The new county would start with $100 million in unfunded pension obligations;

  10. The new county will lose significant state and federal grant financing used for critical social services;
